In the Doldrums

from by Sombre Ecstasy

The doldrums is a colloquial expression derived from historical maritime usage, which refers to those parts of the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean affected by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, a low-pressure area around the Equator where the prevailing winds are calm.

This is a fictional story about a captain and crew's experience in the doldrums.

Adrift upon the open sea
Suppressed winds, oppressive heat
Half the crew is plagued with sickness
In the doldrums, gods abandon and deceive

We pray for days receive no answers
Fatalities pile by the hour
It's time that we renounce the masters
The gods desert the loyal
And so I declare my heresy

Come morning the ship is struck by wanton wind
The divines have met with my demands
Waves swelling with unnatural force
Have we been blessed or have we been damned?

Alarmed signal from the crow's nest
A storm has been spotted to the West
I embrace the gods' cruel retribution
The remaining men wait with unrest
